"If you are going to buy or rent a musical instrument, I highly recommend Long & McQuade. We had a problem with a new instrument we purchased there, and they looked after us completely. I'm sure glad we bought it from Long & McQuade." - Jim McGinn.

The Lydian Studio of Music is accepting new students for violin, cello, piano, guitar and ukulele. Group lessons are available and are a fun learning opportunity that allows students to connect with others in a stimulating and effective manner. Group lessons are offered based on enrollment.

The Lydian Studio of Music is a home-based studio in North Calgary that has been in operation for 19 years. We have grown through the years to offer many disciplines and yes we are currently accepting new students. We offer a wide range of programs from early-childhood (3+) to adults, which we enjoy immensely! Are you looking for lessons for fun? A new hobby? Academia? We’ve got you covered.

I attained my B. Mus from the University of Victoria and have studied pedagogy from the Suzuki Association of Americas completing all my training from Early Childhood to book 10. I am classically trained and have studied with a variety of musicians worldwide. My teaching style is a blend between Suzuki and Traditional methods and I offer lessons that are tailored to the individual needs/wants of each student. Attention to technical components and musicality provides students with the tools necessary to do what they wish with their instrument.

In an effort to enhance the education my students receive, I have started a new program for this September called Apollo’s Disciples - This is a new concept string orchestra/ensemble that injects modern well-known film, rock and pop songs into the playing experience. We offer fun weekly rehearsals utilizing well-known hit songs with original arrangements. You must be currently enrolled in private lessons (any studio), have been playing for at least three years, and love pop/film music - then this might be a program for you!

My daughter began cello lessons with Christine Williams 5 years ago and although we drove 1 hour each way to get there we considered the effort well worth it. The only thing that outweighs Christine's extensive training and knowledge is her enthusiasm for teaching and a genuine love of music. Lessons are done in a relaxed environment but with an intensity not often seen (I have three other children who have been taking piano and violin. They have seen a variety of teachers. Christine's instruction is second to none!) Although my daughter was busy during high school with sports and music, Christine worked patiently with us to accommodate her schedule. My daughter has just begun University and continues her lessons because both Christine and the cello are now an important part of her life. She leaves each lesson rejuvenated and inspired. We have never posted a review before but compelled to do so now so that everyone knows what a top quality teacher and school of Music this is. Your kids will
be in excellent musical hands! - Carol

"Derek Demierre is a gifted piano and voice teacher. He is absolutely passionate about music. My son likes to learn the piano from Derek. He enjoys the time with Derek very much. I am grateful to him for everything he has taught my son and the joy he brings to our family." -Sandy Law (parent)

"Derek makes it a comfortable learning environment where it is okay to make mistakes. He brings out the absolute best in my singing ability - working with my natural range and then working to expand it. You are not just another kid who is there for a lesson - he really gets to know you and personalizes the lessons. He also gives good exercises that are simple and easy to do at home. The lessons are really fun with lots of stories and laughter!" -Natalie B (student)

"We enrolled our daughter in Derek's music class at the age of 3. Derek was so committed and he came to our house and began bonding with her right away. She gradually came to know the instructor and comfortably enjoyed his company before hitting the first note. His passion for music and teaching children at an early age and his patience is unique. Our daughter is now heading for first grade and continues attending his music lessons. We wish this bonding will never break away. It is an honor knowing him and his family, and we are looking forward for years to come, to have him as our child's music instructor." -Kati and Behdad

  • Piano Lessons - Douglasdale - SE

I am a kind, patient and creative piano, recorder and theory teacher and teaching is my passion! I strive to develop basic skills and musicality in a formal, but relaxed atmosphere for all students that I teach. My home studio is in Douglasdale.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree with an education diploma and many years of experience teaching privately, at music schools and education departments and plan to teach students that receive home school education. I have many other musical interests like choir singing, bell ringing, and ensemble playing and accompaniment for a church.

I teach piano lessons in my home studio on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and plan to travel to teach in-home lessons on Mondays. I teach RCM Level 1 to 8 theory and piano to the students that are interested in exams, but I have many students that want to play for fun and they do not do the formal exam training. I strive to develop musical skills for them in a relaxed atmosphere with popular songs, hymns, technique, and recitals.

I give one lesson free of charge as an introduction to students and parents before I place the student on the timetable. Lessons will start as of September, but summer lessons can also be scheduled during July and August.

  • Piano Lessons - Douglas Glen - SE

I provide piano lessons for kids (all ages) and adults in my studio, at your home, and online. Interestingly, most of my students come to me mainly because of the following reasons: 1. They were frustrated with RCM approach because they were pushed too hard. 2. They didn't progress fast enough because of their teacher's method of instruction (eg. teacher sugar coating). I believe in a balanced approach where teacher/student/parent set reasonable expectations together and get there at the students' own pace. Lessons will be taking place: 30min-$35.

  • Fiddle and Violin Lessons - Queensland - SE

My name is Lynae Dufresne. I have been playing fiddle for over 30 years and travelled the world extensively bringing music to the masses, and was nominated for fiddle player of the year by the Canadian Country Music Awards. I have been trained classically as well as trained in the Texas style of contest fiddle. My love of fiddle music led me to a group called Barrage, in which I performed and toured with for 5 years, and introduced me to many other styles of fiddle music. This has allowed my students to explore these avenues of the Fiddle world, while still keeping to the technical training of Classical Violin.

I have been teaching privately as well as workshops in Canada and the US. I taught the Bow Valley Fiddlers and have coached the Calgary Fiddlers and have been teaching for over 12 years. When requested I also teach and prepare students for RCM Exams. I am expanding my teaching this year and opening up Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the day and into the evening hours. I teach the very young to the very old alike. I have taught students as young as 3 and as old as 85. I am a mom as well and understand the challenge of keeping kids interested, so I teach a hybrid of fiddle and violin, as I believe that the classical side of music is very important for reading, posture, and techniques. As far as the fiddle is concerned, I believe that fiddle music is what feeds the soul.

I teach 30 or 45 minute lessons, and if there is enough interest I would love to teach group lessons as well.

I am located in the SE and teach out of my home. I can be reached at (403) 968-9283 or (403) 455-9739.

Flo's Vocal Arts Studio (Est. 2004)

Hi, my name is Flo Shustack and I have been a professional performer, singer and bandleader for over thirty-five years. As well, during this period of time, I was a registered occupational therapist in many areas of medical and mental health, youth, special needs, rehab and long-term care. What you get with me in my studio is the best of all my experience and a very integrated, functional and fun approach. Contemporary singing lessons, comprehensive vocal performance coaching, exceptional individualized mentorship and outstanding regular experiential opportunities. Yes, I had Western Board Conservatory training as well along the way, however, my approach is non-conservatory, in other words, no exams, no pressure and non-competitive. I am located in a bright, spacious, warm and safe home studio. Along with the weekly session, regular workshops are offered in songwriting, recording studio, harmony and a variety of other experiences. There are recital showcases on a monthly basis. Not only do I cover the vocal basics of good and healthy singing, I also do beginner’s piano and theory. Pop, rock, country, jazz, musical theatre, semi-classical, alternative, etc. A great advantage for homeschooling situations and those involved in dance and athletics where schedules may change or may be challenging, in that I can be quite flexible since my studio is in my home. Come experience the joy of making music with Studio 216! The benefits of studying an instrument and creating music are endless. I would love to be a part of your musical journey!

I have been teaching music for more than 25 years. I currently teach piano and theory in my home in Woodbine, Calgary. There are spaces available for students aged 5 and up for private lessons. I work with students of all ages and stages. At Studio 216, we take a comprehensive approach to music education as we learn to play the piano. Music literacy, healthy technique, composition, music theory, movement, singing and ear training, performance preparation, accompaniment skills (and more) are all part of our lessons. In addition to a weekly private lesson specifically tailored to each student, we also work together regularly in supportive group classes, ensemble playing, and theory classes. This balance of private lessons with a group component sets the studio apart and accelerates learning, plus adds a whole lot of fun! I believe music is meant to be made with friends and family.

I received a Bachelor of Music (with Honours) from Memorial University and a Master of Music Education from the University of Oklahoma, where I also received a campus-wide Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award. I've been playing piano and making music my whole life, and now I get to experience music-making with my own 3 young children. It would be a pleasure to meet you and see if we might be a good fit.
